Cable35 – Fungus (Review)

Fungus by Cable35 album artCable35 are in love with the ‘90s. Their latest offering, Fungus, is 19 minutes of Nirvana worship with traces of Pixies (“Rental Sunshine”) and pure punk rock (“Boznich”) thrown in for flavor. At their best, this UK trio bring enough energy to rival country mates Pulled Apart By Horses (“Spinach”), or surprise the listener by making a humongous leap from clean chords to a discordant solo (“Sanitation”). The vocals never lack in intensity as vocalist/guitarist Jeff does his best Cobain impression, and where he leaves off, bassist Kriz seamlessly picks up. At their worst, the band sounds like they’re trying to force decent songs into good songs like those mentioned above. Not a bad problem to have, but somewhat annoying when decent takes up half of the EP’s run time.
