COACHELLA’S LINEUP IS HERE!
There is unbelievable excitement going around for the newly announced as of a couple hours ago lineup for Coachella, one of the biggest and most popular festivals in the world. Hosted in the Indio valley in California, Coachella plays out over back to back weekends, with this year’s Weekend one being April 12-14, and the second being the following weekend, April 19-21.
Here’s everything you need to know about this year’s Coachella bill:
Friday plays host to a dynamic duo of recently reunited British acts. The Stone Roses and Blur tag-team as headliners on the festival’s opening nights. The Stone Roses, formed in 1983, released two breakthrough records, their self-titled debut in 1989 and Second Coming in 1994. The band achieved massive popularity in the UK and had limited success in the US, but in-fighting lead to the group’s breakup in 1996. The band reunited after years of speculation in 2011, headlining major European festivals throughout the year. Coachella marks the band’s first US appearance since their reunion.
Blur, mostly known in the U.S. for “Song 2” off their 1997 self-titled album, will co-headline the Fridays. Blur had achieved massive popularity in the UK long before 1997. The band were mainstays across the pond, releasing highly popular and influential records. The band went on hiatus in 2001, with the band pursuing various solo projects, including frontman Damon Albarn’s highly successful project Gorillaz. The band came off hiatus in 2008, but have only been performing together recently. Coachella also makes Blur’s first US appearances since their return from hiatus.
Saturday sees the recently active Phoenix headline the middle days. Phoenix saw great success in 2009 with the release of their 4th studio album, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, behind the strength of the singles “1901” and “Lisztomania”. The band will return with studio album number 5 with Bankrupt!, scheduled to be released sometime in April.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers headlined every festival there seemed to be in 2012. They may have saved their biggest performance yet for Coachella. RHCP have been touring off of their 2011 release, I’m With You, their first record with guitarist Josh Klinghoffer. The band toured the U.S. extensively in 2012, hitting up a lot of the major festivals including the Hangout Music Fest, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, and Austin City Limits.
Maybe the biggest surprise of all the bands performing this year (to me, anyway) is the Violent Femmes. Yes. The VIOLENT. FEMMES. The 80’s/90’s cult icons will reunite to play the Saturdays of the festival. The band is best known for their self-titled debut record released in 1983, featuring the ever-so-copied “Blister in the Sun”. The band’s reunion comes as a total shock to everyone. I can’t wait to see this performance and hopefully they’ll tour!
The Postal Service, who revealed their reunion a few days ago, along with a reissue of their only record, Give Up, will also be playing Coachella on the Saturdays. The duo, fronted by Death Cab for Cutie-famous Ben Gibbard, and producer Jimmy Tamborello (of Headset fame) will be reuniting and touring, with Coachella being one of the first shows announced. This is incredible news for fans and maybe this will lead to a 2nd record and more touring.
What can you say about Jurassic 5? The alternative hip hop group, who released 4 studio records and a slew of amazing tracks between 1993 and their split in 2007, will also be reuniting for the festival, playing on the festival’s Fridays. The group, who put out some of the best hip hop of the last decade in my opinion, is only confirmed for Coachella but I certainly hope this means they will tour.
BEST OF THE REST:
Friday’s got probably the most stacked lineup of all the days at the festival. Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Modest Mouse, the legendary Lou Reed, Trent Reznor side project How To Destroy Angels, Band of Horses, Beach House, Metric, Of Monsters and Men, Japandroids, Smiths-famed guitarist Johnny Marr, Jello Biafra and more. Easily the best single day of a festival in a long time, in my opinion.
Saturday certainly isn’t lacking either. Sigur Ros, New Order, Grizzly Bear, Descendents, Portugal The Man, Dropkick Murphys, Shovels and Rope and more litter this awesome lineup.
Sunday really ups the ante with Vampire Weekend, Social Distortion, rap legends Wu-Tang Clan, Tame Impala, The Gaslight Anthem, Dinosaur Jr., Jeff the Brotherhood and more. Sunday definately has an amazing lineup in it’s own right, it could be just it’s own festival like Friday.
Not gonna lie guys. I would kill to go to this festival. This got almost the perfect lineup. If it only had the Foo Fighters….
FINAL GRADE: A+
